The British Film Designers Guild (BFDG) and the University of Westminster present this special feature film screening of Atonement. The event is part of International Production Design Week 2023, organized by the Production Designers Collective, a group of over 1100 colleagues dedicated to mutual support through sharing knowledge, encouragement and experience.
The 2007 British romantic World War II film adapted from Ian McEwan’s novel chronicles a crime and its consequences over the course of six decades, beginning in the 1930s and follows the lives of young lovers Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley) and Robbie Turner (James McAvoy). When the couple are torn apart by a lie constructed by Cecilia’s jealous younger sister, Briony (Saoirse Ronan), all three of them must deal with the consequences. Robbie is the hardest hit, since Briony’s deception results in his imprisonment, but hope for Cecilia and her beau increases when their paths cross during World War II.
Production Designer Sarah Greenwood and Set Decorator, Katie Spencer, the duo behind the Summer hit Barbie, will join us as special guests in our post screening Q&A alongside key members of the art, set decoration and location departments, Alison Harvey, Adam Richards, Niall Moroney and Nick Gottschalk.
Amongst many accolades the film gained, Sarah and Katie won a BAFTA for Best Production Design and were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Production Design.
This is a unique chance to revisit this multi award winning film, hear about the process of creating this world across many different time periods and put your question to the team.
The Q & A will be moderated by CREAM researcher Jane Barnwell.
This special event is co-organised with the British Film Designers Guild (BFDG).
