With May Adadol Ingawanij, Luigi Monteanni, Jessica Kwok and Riar Rizaldi
Taking its title from a hypothesis in particle physics and astrophysics, Strangelet is a symposium programmed in tandem with Mirage, Riar Rizaldi’s exhibition at Gasworks.
A strangelet refers to a droplet of subatomic particles consisting of strange quarks. If ordinary matter comes into contact with a strangelet, the matter will suddenly transform into strangelet, changing the order of the universe as we know it into something strange and beyond our comprehension.
Conceptualising the strangelet as a production of strange and pervasive knowledge, the symposium brings together friends, strangers and mavericks who explore topics that, in the context of Sufism, are categorised as gharib [weird or strange]. This includes animistic apparatuses, weird science, possessions, and trance rituals. Participants and attendees might feel as if they are part of an anarchist secret society sermon like Acéphale, or a meeting of the elusive mystical philosophy group Ikhwan al-Safa.
